"Ministry" is not just what the pastors or the paid staff do around the church and with individuals. Ministry is the work of the whole church. St. Paul writes in the 12 chapter of his first letter to the Corinthians,
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
What Paul is saying is that everyone (yes, even you) have been giving the gifts of the Spirit to be of use in the work of the Lord's Church. We believe that not only does the Spirit give us gifts and talents, but also calls on us to use them in the specific work of the church.
We use the acronyme SHAPE to talk about how God has uniquely created us to do ministry in one form or another. Knowing your SHAPE helps you discover what God might be calling you to be about in the ministry of the Church. SHAPE stands for:
S: Spiritual Gifts
H: Heart (passions)
A: Abilities
P: Personalty
E: Experience
These are all part of who we are - our makeup - that God has created in us that make us - US. Figuring out what our shape is helps us discover where we can find a place in the ministry of the church to serve.
